Query:
How good it is to take multi-vitamin tablets and calcium tablets your hair? Also, how will it help my hair growth, at this stage of ageing?

Dr. Aparna Says:
Falguni, every decade the activity of our follicles reduces, so we do experience slower and lesser hair growth as we age. Multivitamins are good because they will give you biotin needed for hair and improve overall health. Calcium again, is good for your age from a health perspective. But, it is even better to bolster these in your diet as you will get them in their natural form. So, eat coloured fruits and vegetables, increase your protein intake, add leafy spinach for calcium. All these will benefit you.

Query:
Is indulging in sweets and chocolates harmful for your hair? I am addicted to chocolates and recently read about it being bad for your hair. I' m even experiencing bad hair days daily. Please help?

Dr. Aparna Says:
Hi, Sonia, there is no research directly linking chocolates to bad hair. However, foods with high Glycemic index(sugary) are pro inflammatory and do detract from health and may have a bearing on the appearance of skin and hair. Eat a diet rich in vegetables, nuts and protein and you can surely indulge in the occasional chocolate!

Query:
It's said that your hair gives a direct insight on what you eat! I have been trying to get rid of dandruff. Anti dandruff shampoos give temporary relief. What foods should I eat and avoid in order to control the dandruff quotient?

Dr. Aparna Says:
What you eat definitely has a bearing on your health and therefore on your hair health as well. Do ensure you get enough protein like fish, egg whites and sprouts in your diet. Reducing pro inflammatory foods like sugars and starch will also help you. Eat foods rich in B vitamins like green and yellow vegetables and nuts. Probiotics like yogurt ant dahi also help by reducing yeast load on your scalp. However, this must be combined with adequate local care like a good shampoo. If your dandruff is persistent and resistant, you should see a dermatologist.

Query:
I sweat a lot due to heavy workouts daily, which makes my scalp itchy and sweaty and dirty. The result is that I have to often wash my hair and end up losing hair after hair wash. Please advise…

Dr. Aparna Says:
You can wash your hair as often as you need as it does not really increase hair loss. You could be genuinely losing hair due to a process called telogen effluvium. Start using parachute Therapie three times a week along with switching to a mild shampoo conditioner system and wait to see reduction in hair fall. If your condition persists after a month or so, please see a dermatologist.

Query:
I love to style my hair all the time, and thus my hair bears the brunt of harsh chemicals and heated irons and blow dryers. I do deep conditioning weekly and also have a practice of oiling but I feel my natural shine has disappeared. Please suggest m

Dr. Aparna Says:
Heer, you must reduce the use of harsh chemicals for the long term health of your hair. The disulfide bonds in your hair will progressively weaken as will your cuticles and it will be difficult to regain the shine. Let your hair dry naturally after a wash as much as possible. Use oil with a good massage to condition your hair and wash it with a gentle shampoo (laureth sulfates). You can use a serum to make it more manageable and to reduce over-combing. Eat a healthy diet and surely you will regain the shine.

Query:
I want to bring life to my long and dull hair. No amount of shampooing works. Please suggest me something.

Dr. Aparna Says:
No, regular hair cut does not accelerate growth, but gives you a more groomed appearance. It also, helps you care for your hair and manage it better. The only way to get rid of split ends is to cut it above the split. You can prevent splitting by reducing dryness by using oil prior to wash and serum or mousse post a wash.

Query:
They say a regular hair cut accelerates your hair growth. Is this true? I don't want to cut my hair but want to get rid of split ends. Can you suggest some alternative solution?

I heard oiling is no longer enough for your hair care. Could you suggest me some more hair care tips for hair growth.

Dr. Aparna Says:

Query:
Does excessive brushing and combing of hair lead to increased hair fall? And what’s the remedy for such hair fall?

Dr. Aparna Says:
Excessive brushing and combing can lead to physical damage, shaft breakage, split ends and shedding. Use a wide toothed comb with gentle strokes to reduce this. If you have persistent hair fall, a researched and proven product like parachute Therapie will help you reduce and control your hair fall.
