| Preventing damage to healthy lustrous hair |
A good hair care regimen is essential for healthy, lustrous hair. Your hair should look smooth, silky and shiny whether it is long or short, straight or curly. Dry, brittle hair is a clear cry that your hair is not being cared for. Everyday events such as shampooing, hair drying, brushing and blow drying can cause great damage to your hair. |
How you take care of your hair will greatly depend on the type of hair you have, your lifestyle and your hair style. |
| Hair type and Hair care |
The hair care regimen for a person with dry curly hair will differ from that of one with straight fine hair. But as a general rule, all hair needs to be treated gently especially when it is wet. |
Wet hair is stretchable and hence it is more prone to breakage or cuticle damage.
Do not use hair dryers on very wet hair. It is always better to let your hair become half dry naturally before applying the hair dryer. |
| Teens and Oily hair |
Most teens discover that their hair has become a lot more “oily” During the teen years there is a tendency for the sebaceous glands in the hair follicle to over secrete sebum- a substance that moisturizes the hair and skin. This makes teen hair excessively “Oily”. The remedy is frequent hair washing, but it is recommended that you use a mild shampoo and take care not to traumatize your hair when it is wet. |
| Dry hair and Washing |
If your hair is dry, it is recommended that you wash it with less frequency. For many people washing their hair once a week is adequate. People with curly hair are normally found to have dry hair too. This type of hair is more fragile than oily hair and you will have to be extra careful in the shampoos and styling products you use. Shampoos and conditioners made specifically for dry hair will be of great help. |
| Your lifestyle and Hair care |
If you are an athlete or spend a lot of your time outdoors, and have oily hair you might want to wash your hair after you work up a sweat while playing or working.
If your hair is constantly exposed to the sun, the wind and other elements, it is recommended that you apply a shampoo and conditioner for dry hair. |
| Hair styling |
Hair styling products and appliances such as curling and straightening irons can severely damage your hair even if used sparingly.
It is safe to follow the instructions given with the product or to refrain from using them on wet hair or at high heat settings. |
It is always advisable to ask your hair stylist / skin specialist or dermatologist for advice on using heat styling products. |
| How to minimize hair damage |
Significantly damaged hair cannot be repaired. Preventing injury to the hair is the ideal way to avoid hair fall. Regular and thorough conditioning will control the damage. This will reduce stress on the outer layer, lower friction and will help avoid hair fall. |
| How to wash hair |
Make sure your hair hangs naturally while you wash it, either by standing in the shower or with your head leaning over the bath. Always, rinse hair thoroughly with warm water before you shampoo. |
| How to shampoo hair |
Pour enough shampoo to create a lather, which will cover all of your hair. Then lather up the shampoo in your hand, and apply it to your hair. Start from the scalp and work the shampoo into your hair gently by massaging with your fingertips. Remember to keep your hair hanging naturally. Rinse by letting the water run through your hair whilst you caress it downwards with your fingers. Be careful not to rub your wet hair too fiercely, as it is at this stage that hair is very easily damaged by friction. |
| How to condition hair |
Ensure that all the shampoo is rinsed from the hair. Then apply the conditioner to your hair and work it in gently but thoroughly with your fingertips. Leave it to work for a minute or two and rinse it off. Again, be careful not to rub your wet hair. |
| How to dry your hair |
It is advisable to carefully pat your hair dry using a clean, dry towel. While your hair is still damp, gently loosen out any tangles using a brush or a wide-toothed comb. Comb in downward strokes. This will help to keep the hair from splitting and breaking. If possible, allow your hair to dry naturally. |
| How to use the dryer |
Dryer should be used only on damp, towel-dried hair. Avoid blow-drying when your hair is dripping wet. Use dryer cautiously, on the lowest speed and the lowest heat setting. Keep the dryer moving constantly and don't concentrate the heat in one spot, as this can |
dry out the moisture from the hair and even damage it permanently. And always stop before your hair is completely dry. |
